of Natalia Vodianova
In just a few years Natalia Vodianova has gone from an unknown girl from Nizhny Novgorod to one of the top models in the world. She spent her childhood in a single-parent family with her sister, Oksana, a child with cerebral palsy and autism. Today Natalia is not just a beautiful, successful woman and mother of four children: she is increasingly referred to as the founder of the Naked Heart Foundation, created to support children with special needs and building play parks and playgrounds. Many celebrities do charity work, but for Natalia it is not a fad or a way to draw attention to her person. Her desire to help is absolutely sincere and selfless, coming from the heart, and she is committed to bringing her most cherished dream to life — changing for the better the lives of all people in Russia and especially those who need it most.
Recently in New York, the founder of the Naked Heart Foundation was named "Glamour" Woman of the Year. In her acceptance speech Natalia said: "There is nothing glamorous about raising a child with special needs. So I want to dedicate this award to all the women who do not expose but support their children."
Natalia, on the one hand you are one of the most sought-after models in the world, on the other you are known as a philanthropist. How does work as a model help you to do your charity work?
My work helps me attract donations and interest in our foundation. Friends are very helpful to us when, for example, we organize charity auctions. We always try to surprise the guests and offer them truly unique items. For example, in 2013, at the Love Ball in Monaco, Rafael Nadal offered to hold a tennis lesson as a lot, Mario Testino to make a personal photo session, and Karl Lagerfeld to arrange an internship at Chanel. Their support helped us raise substantial funds for the Foundation's programmes. But of course I'm sure that everyone can help regardless of income level or fame.
Your charity, Naked Heart Foundation, celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Within this time the first centre for children with special needs in Nizhny Novgorod was opened and more than 100 playgrounds across the country were built. Do you feel satisfied with the achieved results?
Much has been done but much more can be done by us. 130 playgrounds and parks built to date — this is just the beginning. Our goal is to make it at least five hundred!
As for the Foundation’s programme "Every Child Deserves a Family", which aims to support families raising children with special needs, we also have big plans. We not only opened the centre in Nizhny Novgorod, but we also organized the work of support services for various ages in various regions of Russia, launched an educational project in six schools in Nizhny Novgorod, and we will continue to develop, broaden, deepen and consolidate the Foundation's existing projects. We also support and will continue to support our partner organizations which help families with such children. We are still working on our educational project which began in 2013.
Its main goal is to make sure that children with autism can learn in school. To date over 100 people have participated. The Ministry of Education and Science took an interest in the Project: by the decision of the Deputy Minister of Education of Russia V. Sh. Kaganov, schools involved in the Project were included in the number of federal innovative platforms for the implementation of national standards of the special education.
Tell us please how the idea to create a fund was born? At what point did you realize that you wanted to help children with special needs?
The impetus for the creation of the Foundation was the tragedy in Beslan in 2004. I immedia-tely realized that we needed to do something and then the idea of games as therapy for children who have suffered trauma was born.
Until 2011, the Fund had only worked on one programme, "Play with Purpose" building parks and playgrounds across the country. Then everything changed a bit. I read a wonderful book by Alan Philps, "The Boy from Baby House 10", about the life of a boy called Vanya whose parents exposed him and he went to a psycho-neurological boarding school. His life, of course, is very different from the life of my sister, Oksana, a disabled child who was always a part of the family. Alan opened my eyes to the situation in the country and we decided to start the second programme, "Every Child Deserves a Family". Our main goal is that parents of children with such diagnoses as autism, intellectual disability, Down syndrome and cerebral palsy, could keep the children in their families and not give them in to state institutions.
Who supported you at the beginning of this noble endeavor? With whom did you discuss the idea of organizing the foundation?
In 2004, I lived in New York, and this idea was highly supported by my friend, Diane von Fürstenberg. She became a co-organizer of the first event to raise funds for the newly established foundation and helped to find a room and lots. Also, my agents and colleagues have always been with me.
How much were you able to raise in the first year of the foundation, and how has it been replenished today?
The most successful method for us was the first one we chose — a dinner party and auction. Since 2004 and until now the main means we raise is in this way. The first time we were able to collect $ 350,000. Now, of course, we raise many times more.
In which city was the first Family Support Centre opened? What feelings did you experience when you first saw that your efforts had become a reality? How many children with disabilitiesvisit it today?
Our first Family Support Centre was opened in my hometown of Nizhny Novgorod. In 2014, it turned three years old. It’s a wonderful feeling, because before many families had nowhere to go, and now they are completely free to engage with psychologists and speech therapists. All of the specialists at the Centre are highly qualified, we regularly organize seminars and internships with foreign experts for them, giving them access to modern methods of working with children, which proved to be effective. Now our Centre is regularly attended by 56 people. Since its establishment, more than a hundred people have had consultations. But, as I said, this is just the beginning. In Nizhny Novgorod we need at least 16 such centres, and at least 1200 throughout Russia.
How much money is required to create a specialized children's playground? How do you ensure that the building meets the required standards?
We build playgrounds as well as large game parks, and the budget for such projects depends on their equipment and scale. Usually it is at least 30 thousand euros. For many years we have been working with the "KSIL" company, the largest manufacturer of gaming equipment in Eastern Europe with more than 30 years of experience in the field. All equipment provided by them has passed international certification and meets the latest international standards of quality and safety.
Please tell us about the annual international forums organized by the Naked Heart Foundation. Why did you decide to hold such forums? Is organizing family support centres and construction of playgrounds not enough?
A year after the launch of our second programme, "Every child deserves a family", and working with leading experts in the field of child development, it has become obvious to us that Russian specialists just need to share experiences and to communicate among themselves, as well as with specialists on an international level. Then the idea of the International Forum, "Every child deserves a family", emerged. Our first forum was held in October 2012 and was dedicated to the modern and efficient care for children with special needs. After its successful completion, we decided to hold similar forums on an annual basis. For three years the interest in this event and the number of participants has increased significantly. This year the forum was attended by over 880 people from 10 countries and 66 cities. Over the first few days of registration, we received so many requests that we were forced to close it early. Therefore, in order to give earlier access to the forum to a greater number of people this year, we began to translate all the lectures and master classes live online. You can view them on our website (forum.nakedheart.org).
How, in your opinion, has the situation changed for Russian people who have particular developmental challenges over the last 10 years of the Naked Heart Foundation's work?
I see that these people have become more visible, they have an opportunity to socialize and, due to changes in legislation, to go to school. Change continues, and eventually there will be more. We finance the work of the legal team that initiates and provides legislative changes in Russia. We share all their ideas and hope that they will be implemented.
Children who are involved in the family support centres grow up and become adults. How is their life in the future? Can they continue to attend classes at the Centre?
Our Centre was initially focused on children, adolescents and young adults over 18 years of age, since it was created in conjunction with the "Veras" parent organization, whose children have already grown up. In Nizhny Novgorod, a project has been developed with a training apartment, where young people can practice independent life or life with support. We strive to ensure that there are suitable types of employment available for people with special needs, but all these are developed gradually. So far, a good example of an accomplished life cycle in our country has only been presented in Pskov, but my colleagues and I dream that it will eventually happen everywhere in our country.
Natalia, you spent your childhood with your sister, Oksana, who was a child with special needs. What was her fate?
Work with the experts of our foundation has completely changed life both for my sister and for our whole family. Now Oksana attends our Family Support Centre, where she studies how to communicate with others and how not be afraid of them and various situations. Now she has made friends and even a boyfriend. She has changed a lot. For example, Oksana did not used to think about what she looks like, and now she loves to care for herself. We see that she has become more open and communicative. Her life has greatly improved and my mother has more free time.
How do you see your foundation and its success in 10 years?
I hope that in ten years, through our work, Russia will become more open to people with disabilities. We will continue to develop a system of services for families and children, to continue the work of our educational project in other regions, and to do everything to change the attitude of society and the state towards such people. I am myself very interested in following the changes that are already taking place in society, and I am sure that in ten years the result of our work will be even more noticeable.
The NAKED HEART FOUNDATION is a non-profit organisation founded in 2004 by Natalia Vodianova. The Foundation’s primary areas of work are creating a system of free services for vulnerable families raising children with special needs and building inclusive playgrounds. Currently, the Foundation has been involved in more than 130 play sites throughout Russia, dozens of Russian NPOs projects working with children with special needs, leading the Family Support Centre in Nizhny Novgorod, the training program for school teachers working with autistic children, and the annual International Forum —
"Every Child Deserves a Family".
Thank you for your help!
We must admit that it's somewhat hard to imagine that Franck Muller — a seemingly eternal watch brand with a globally renowned name — has been here with us for less than a quarter of a century. The fact that the hearts of this brand's watches are now beating on the hands of true connoisseurs remains undisputed, and that cannot be neglected. The keys to the success of time regained, as always, were the continuing searches, ups, downs and new quests that allow the creators of the brand to clearly see the future.
At the end of 1980s, two men — Franck Muller and Vartan Sirmakes — met in the city of Geneva. They shared a passion for watch-making, both loved their job since childhood and had vast complementary experience in the field of watch-making — manufacturing beautiful, expensive and brilliant watches.
At the time, Franck Muller was making his own models under the Franck Genève brand. Every year since 1986, he has presented new unrivalled watches based on prestigious complications, which has earned him the reputation of watch-making genius. As for Vartan Sirmakes, he has made cases with fine forms and lines for many watch-making brands in a workshop he set up in one of the districts of Geneva by Lake Geneva.
In 1991, Franck asked Vartan to design cases for his new models. Soon they both realised that they could create a remarkable brand together. Demand, as usual, spurred technical conception, but neither of them would have ever imagined that 20 years later their creation would become one of the most famous names in the very extensive list of watch-making brands.
Officially founded in 1991 in the village of Genthod near Geneva, the Franck Muller factory regained its place in the same village three years later, in a mansion built in 1905. This peaceful place of 16 hectares overlooking Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc became home to more than just a factory — it harboured a large complex named Watchland.
In the early 90s, the Swiss watch-making industry was in the midst of a serious crisis. The invention of the quartz mechanism chilled the enthusiasm of mechanical watch buyers, and most manufacturers gave up. But knowledge and skills, as well as the successful search for new forms and designs allowed Franck and Vartan to go against the tide and enthrone mechanical watches with complications, which at that time was more than courageous.
At the time, it was difficult to imagine that these watches would be on the shelves next to the other proud "Swiss". It was almost unthinkable to gain credibility amidst the large watch-making houses that had been present in the market for almost a century. The watch-making industry, especially the Fine Watch-making segment, has always been bound by tradition and hence very cautious about innovations, particularly in terms of design. So it was a bold move to introduce the case shape known as the Cintrée Curvex™, something previously non-existent in the watch market: three-dimensional curved lines of the case body involving huge production complexity. The introduction of vividly coloured dials, such as royal blue, also became a first and revolutionary step in the world of Fine Watch-making.
Independence of production
The internal control of all stages of production implemented several years ago allowed Franck Muller Company to produce unique models and be responsive and able to provide customers with better quality in the shortest time possible. Thanks to the industrial verticalisation, the brand stood out for its innovative spirit and reliable technologies and was able to boldly move on whilst fully respecting the Swiss watch-making traditions. Thus, due to the independence and autonomy of the various production stages, the brand acquired the ability to dictate trends instead of following them, which has contributed to the transformation of the Franck Muller brand into a status symbol.
Master of complications
In less than 20 years, the watch-making brand has managed to garner international acclaim based on spectacular growth, enviable financial soundness and the production of 40,000 watches per year. Today, the brand has 6 production sites with more than 500 employees in Switzerland and 48 exclusive boutiques and 600 outlets in more than 100 countries. The company's success and fame were granted by its exceptional collections: from the Crazy Hours or Vegas "funny" models with complications, to the Aeternitas Mega — the world's most complicated wristwatch with 36 complications and 1,483 components. This last model secured the brand's position as "Master of Complications".
Franck Muller and Vartan Sirmakes have managed to turn a "small brand" into a large successful company. A combination of original design and complex traditional mechanisms introduced in the Franck Muller collections fills them with a harmony that has conquered the entire world and started this incredible and enviable success story!

New voices from Moscow
a musical fireworks
for good cause
On 28 February 2015, a unique charity concert was held in the form of the musical project “New Voices” («Новые голоса») in Moscow. The event was organised to support the ZWERG NASE fund.
“New Voices” — five unique soloists from the best musical theatres of Russia. They have performed at the Bolshoi Theatre more than once, they are well known in the State Musical Theatre as well as other famous creative houses in Moscow.
Their program is as diverse as their voices and personalities, and “New Voices”, the gentlemen of the new generation, have managed to captivate the demanding audience. Connoisseurs of not only opera, but also jazz, musicals and popular music, as well as ballads and rock, have found their favourite songs in the repertoire. The musical fireworks were accompanied by a brilliant show that included quite a lot of humour.
This unforgettable charity concert was dedicated to ZWERG NASE, an orphanage with a wide and optimally selected range of supportive options for parents of children with disabilities and children with chronic diseases. All donations collected at the event were used for the development of the ZWERG NASE fund, which is unable to finance itself and has no chance of survival without everyone's support.
ZWERG NASE is thankful to all the participants: Alex Dedov, Ivan Vikulov, Michail Davydov, Igor Milyukov, Pavel Ivanov and guests, as well as the organisers of the concert — Regina Willen, Bettina Anz, Sabine Gaedeke, Daniela Scherer, Susanne Posautz, Christine Schneider — for the selfless help and willingness to support its activities.
Les Trois Rois
Les Trois Rois is one of Europe’s oldest city hotels and exudes the charm and elegance of a historic grand hotel. It goes without saying that this luxury establishment offers everything a discerning guest is entitled to expect from a hotel in the five-star category. All in the heart of Basel, in the centre of the Old Town and on the banks of the Rhine.
There are many tales to tell about Les Trois Rois. The guest book reads like a “Who’s who” of world history. Napoleon, Elizabeth II, Pablo Picasso, Thomas Mann and many other leading figures have enjoyed the hotel’s legendary hospitality. And this will remain the case for as long as the Three Kings adorn the façade: Basel’s Grand Hotel will continue to be a home away from home for many famous guests.
Les Trois Rois Bar
It’s the meeting place in Basel. The Les Trois Rois Bar is famous for its cocktails, snacks and cigars. In the winter you can relax in front of a crackling fire, in the summer you sit on the terrace enjoying incomparable views. Whether inside or out, time simply seems to fly in the Les Trois Rois Bar.
Napoleon never actually spent a night here — but this suite recalls his state dinner in the old inn in 1797. Artistic paintings and ceiling and wall stuccos transport you back to the Napoleonic era — especially in the corner salon with its painted relief medallions and gold-plated ornamentation.
The employees of the Les Trois Rois Hotel strive to accommodate your wishes — and not vice-versa: stylish as in France, passionate as in Piemont, tasty as in a brasserie? Les Trois Rois restaurants really do spoil you for choice — they use exclusive, market-fresh ingredients and surprise you with fine creative fare.
Basel World, Art Basel, the Davidoff Swiss Indoors (tennis) and many internationally acclaimed art exhibitions: there are always new delights to discover in Basel and its region. The hotel's concierge will be delighted to take care of the necessary tickets and offer insider tips.
The hotel's employees come from about 20 different nations and are all experts in their field. They all pursue a mutual goal: the well-being and comfort of each and every Les Trois Rois guest. With discreet, first-class service and loving attention to detail, they meet the superior standards merited by their valued guests.
The Power of Beauty
Even though diamonds cannot warm the body, they will surely melt the heart of your loved one... And the top jewellery houses are trying their best to make that happen.
Baselworld, the most highly acclaimed show in the world of watches and jewellery, is still associated with perfection, elegance, exquisite taste and excellent quality. After all, it is the venue where all the key global players of the diamond, pearl and gemstone industry unite under one roof to display their most spectacular items.
At the upcoming Baselworld 2015, the crème de la crème of diamonds, gemstones and pearls will be showcased for the world’s top jewellers, designers and manufacturers to discover. So what can we expect from this season's show?
Diamonds never cease to fascinate and trends show that in coming years the gap between supply and demand is likely to grow
As the saying goes, ‘diamonds are forever’, and women never miss the opportunity to emphasise their own brilliance and charisma with diamonds, regardless of trends. According to all reports, the diamond market will remain balanced in the foreseeable future, with a growing gap between supply and demand expected as a result of anticipated demand growth driven by China, India and the United States. Of course, the rest of the world has many passionate, gentle, dreamy and self-confident women worthy of these jewellery masterpieces. But if we turn to cold, hard facts, over the next decade supply and demand in the diamond market are expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 2.0% and 5.1%, respectively.
Colourful gemstones continue their conquest of the market
Jewellery design in general has exploded in colour, particularly at the high end. “The trend of diversity in colours is rapidly growing,” says lapidary artist Constantin Wild, Idar-Oberstein, Germany. “For example, Haute Joaillerie are using more colourful gems. The tendency among jewellers is to partner with specialized gem houses for certain stones, colours and precision cuts to carve out their niche in the market. Many of those relationships are forged at Baselworld.”
Demand for pearls remains high as the industry strives to match the market
In general, pearl prices are up across the board, with better quality and bigger sizes in short supply, impacted by growing Asian demand. Natural disasters of recent years, such as the super typhoon in the Philippines, forced the prices of Golden South Sea pearls to go up. In white South Seas, dealers report a 30% to 40% price hike due to a drop in production by pearl farmers.
In Tahiti, a shortage of 8 mm to 9 mm sizes caused prices to rise; pearls 15 mm and up in fine quality are difficult to find.
Midnight Feathers Automatic 42 mm
In 2012 Harry Winston brought together two age-old forms of expertise that, until then, nothing had destined to meet: watchmaking, the infinitely complex art of time measurement, and plumasserie, the rare and almost forgotten craft of creating art from feathers. The new Midnight Feathers Automatic 42 mm now leads us on a fascinating journey into the deepest realms of the animal and plant kingdoms, for the colours of the feathers suggest the amber-tinted roots of vetiver, bulrushes and cedar wood. Each watch is a unique experience as each hand-crafted dial naturally varies with the individual feathers and the master craftsman's touch. With infinite patience, each remige , or flight feather, is selected, coaxed into shape then laid in its exact position on the dial, using a loupe for the greatest possible precision. The visually striking marquetry plays on alternating colours, further accentuated by the perfect harmony between the pink gold of the case and the chocolate shades of the alligator strap.
Fendi My Way Limited Editions
Colourful, joyful and above all incredibly glamorous, the Fendi My Way collection comes in two new 50-piece limited series. The watch flaunts its ultra-feminine curves, accentuated by a cambered diamond-set case and a removable little fur collar called “Glamy”. Arctic fox or soft silvery blue, kiwi green, bright orange of fascinating latter; the latter radiates a mesmerizingly seductive appeal and a multifunctional nature. Today’s sophisticated woman can indeed choose to wear the watch in tune with her mood, fur-free for daytime or complete with the Glamy in the evening for an authentic style statement. Wildly chic and imbued with the expertise of the Fendi fur ateliers, these four limited series are fitted with an Elaphe snakeskin strap in a colour to match the Glamy. The small-size version of the watch is studded with 421 diamonds (approx. 1.87 cts), while the larger variation sparkles with 667 diamonds (approx. 3.06 cts).
LAC "Tortue de Joux"
Claude Meylan looks to the grand tradition of form watches to once again sculpt time. The fully skeletonised mechanical movement appears to float between two sapphire crystals. At the heart of the mechanism, the hour and minute wheels guide the hands in their infinite dance. Decorations inspired by the characteristic shutters on the homes of the watchmaking-farmers of yore can be admired here and there, each hinting at the expert hand of the craftsman who brings these delicate finishes to life. The meticulously sculpted bridges create a harmony of forms and play on subtle contrasts in colour with the plate, further accentuated by the transparency of the whole.
Baselworld — the venue for diamonds, gemstones, pearls and watches
According to dealers, the Baselworld exhibition opens the doors to an elite club of people from all over the world who know a lot about jewellery labelled with the names of the best jewellery houses around the world. It is the perfect place to study the market, talk to suppliers, and understand the latest trends in supply and demand.
Designer Michael Youssoufian, Hong Kong, compares a serious gem trader not attending Baselworld to missing the Eiffel Tower while visiting Paris. “For Baselworld 2015, we anticipate great opportunities to buy,” he says. “The market is in a better, more flexible mood to do business. The connoisseur will discover some amazing finds. We reserve the best of our yearly production for Baselworld.”
The exhibition is proud of its customers and constantly expanding their ranks. This is not surprising. The show unites like-minded people with similar tastes, who enjoy privileges and special attention. The current season is no exception. Visit the exhibition and dive into the world of leading jewellery designers with their specific style and creative individuality, into this universe of glitter, glamour and publicity, where everyone can discover unique business opportunities.
