The Living legend
Text: Natalie Ott, Elena Boguslavskaja
— Mr. Cattier, how does it feel to be the head of the Cattier House that produced one of the best champagnes in the world? What emotions do you feel?
— I have to say that I’ve officially been retired since 2011, and that it is my son, Alexandre, who is now the head of the company. However, I am still quite active and continue to work like before. I feel great satisfaction and great pride at the end of my career to have developed the company like I have done, putting our house in the top ten of family Champagne companies, and receiving great recognition for our work and our quality.
— Our first memories are from around the age of 4 years old. What are your first childhood memories of your family business? Is it a cart of hand-picked grapes approaching your house? Or were you standing on a step, looking into the depth of the basements where the champagne was ageing? Or maybe you couldn’t take your eyes off those bubbles that were cheerfully rising in crystal glasses? When did you realise that you wanted to devote your life to champagne?
— My first memories are, of course, totally immersed in champagne: walks with my father in the vineyards, often with a horse because we were still using horses in the fifties to work the vineyards, going down to the cellars, watching people doing the disgorgement, corking, labelling etc., all made by hand, and strong periods like the vintage, which was always a great feast for me. And also soaking my lips in my mother’s glass every time a bottle of champagne was opened.
I have always been passionate about all of those activities devoted to champagne and I always wanted to participate. But I was not specially “programmed” to come back to the company because my older brother was already working with my parents. So I continued my science studies up to a “Maitre en Science” (Master of Science), and then got a “Diplome National d’Oenologie”, both at the University of Reims.
At this time, I saw that my parents had already well developed the house and that there was a great potential, a place for 2 people alongside my brother and a lot of things to do. Although I had the possibility to start a career in the field of science, I finally decided to come back and work in the family company.
— Three centuries have passed since the first Cattier champagne was made. During this time, the tradition of growing grapes and making champagne has been honed to the smallest detail, each of which the Cattier House cherishes. What family traditions, established by the mists of time, are continued by the Cattier clan?
— My family has been working the vineyards for 250 years but has produced champagne since the beginning of the 20th century.
We cannot say that we produce champagne today like we did one century ago. There have been a lot of scientific and technological evolutions. But the method remains the same traditional method and our search of quality and our main aim remains the same.
— You are a namesake of some famous people like philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, jeweller Jean Jacques Cartier and film-maker Jean Jacques Annaud. Did your parents give you your name for a reason?
— In the past it was tradition to give the first male child the same name as his father. So, the name of my father and grandfather was the same: Jean.
When my older brother was born, my parents gave him the same name of Jean but with a second one, creating the name of Jean-Louis.
They did the same for me: Jean-Jacques. Why Jacques, I don’t really know, but I believe that it was my mother who liked this name, maybe she was inspired by Jean Jacques Rousseau.
— It is always interesting to find out about the people who brought up a man who has achieved outstanding results in his life. Please tell us about your parents.
— My parents married in 1936 and had 3 children, my brother, then my sister and then me, the last one.
They have always worked together, my father in production and my mother in the commercial and administrative functions. They made a “wonderful team” and worked hard, developing the company, buying new vineyards, extending the clientèle etc.. They both lived until the age of 86 years old and remained active until this age. My mother was still at the office 2 days before she suddenly died.
They have been really fantastic and a great example for us.
— The name of the “Armand de Brignac” champagne was thought up by your mother, as it is the name of her favourite literary hero. What sort of book is it and which of the hero’s qualities caught her attention?
— Honestly, I don’t know really.
My mother explained to me how she created this brand after reading a novel, but it was in the fifties and I was a young kid.
I don’t know the title of the novel. I just know that she loved the novel and that the main character was the hero: Mr de Brignac!
— Cattier is a big and friendly clan which includes your family. How do you manage to preserve warm and cordial relationships when there are business needs in the background?
— Probably thanks to my parents, we are and will remain a close family. The spirit and the philosophy remains in the family for everybody.
— The Cattier business is being continued by your son, Alexander. He is also a hereditary oenologist, like you, who received professional education. Do you think it was his personal and conscious choice, or do your descendants simply have no choice but to continue the family business? What plans do you have for your grandson?
— I have adhered to the principle of not putting any pressure on my son’s choices. Should he prefer to study medicine or science or anything else, he could do it.
He has chosen to continue the family business by himself and only by himself.
I presume that he will do the same with his own children.
— Mr. Cattier, you were a soldier and served in the army. Do you remember those times with warmth or did they make you a pacifist?
— I did not do my military service in a traditional way. The people who had studied, those who wanted to do something useful and interesting for everybody, could ask to replace the military service with another civil service like scientific missions, or giving education in Third World countries, or anything else in that spirit.
I wanted 2 things for myself: to travel far away and to be useful.
And finally I did a scientific mission in the Kerguelen Islands, which is one of the territories of the “Terres Australes et Antarctiques Francaises” (French Austral and Antarctic Lands).
For one year, we were a mission of about 80 people on a deserted island, totally isolated and completely cut off from the rest of the world. It was in 1970.
I was responsible for the laboratory of “Luminescence Nocturne” (Nocturnal Luminescence), and sent there by the “Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris”. We were studying the phenomenons of Aurora Australis (Aurora Polaris, the equivalent of Aurora Borealis in the northern hemisphere). It allowed me to regularly see the most fabulous natural show you can ever see in the world.
This great adventure was a fantastic and unforgettable experience.
— Who taught you to sing “Dark Eyes” in Russian?
— I knew before starting this scientific mission that I would have to work with Russian people. So before I left I got a book and tape recorder cassettes in order to learn Russian. And I learnt “Dark Eyes” alone with my book and tape recorder.
And more than 40 years later, I still remember this beautiful song like it was yesterday.
One anecdote about that: in 1971, six months after my return from the Kerguelen Islands, I had an urgent operation for appendicitis in Moscow. At the hospital in Moscow we were 5 or 6 people per room, that is to say 4 or 5 Russian people and myself. At this time, I was, of course, the attraction of the room and, with my small knowledge of the Russian language, I managed to communicate a little bit with those very kind people. And every time that a nurse, often a pretty nurse, came in the room to treat us or whatever, they would all ask me: “Jean Jacques Dark Eyes, Jean Jacques Dark Eyes”. So to please them I sang Dark Eyes to the nurse and it finished with everybody laughing.
I think the nurses visited our room more than the others. Still a good recollection.
— Do you have a motto?
— In any circumstance, always stay positive.
— What else is your life filled with apart from your love of champagne? What are your genuine interests?
— I don’t practice any more but I started to pilot private planes very early, before turning 18 years old. Later I bought my own private plane and I liked this activity very much.
I also have a great interest in many sports and, of course, in travelling all over the world.
— You are an active football fan — have you played football yourself? Who is your favourite team?
— As soon as I started boarding at school, at the age of 9 years old, I practised football. And I did not stop until I was 34/35 years old.
My favourite club is, of course, the Stade de Reims, the club of the main city of Champagne. This club had one of the best teams in Europe in the fifties and beginning of the sixties.
During this period, the “Stade de Reims” made 2 finals of the European Cup of Champions Clubs. The first final of the first year of this competition in 1956 in Paris against Real Madrid. Reims lost 4 goals to 3 after having led 2 goals to 0 in the first half, and 3 goals to 2 in the second half.
The second final was in 1959 in Stuttgart, still against Real Madrid but we lost again, 2 goals to 0. After its bankruptcy in the eighties, the Stade de Reims recovered the League 1 of the French championship in 2012.
— You travel around the world to watch your football team’s games. What distinguishes and unites people from different countries?
— The culture of each country distinguishes one person from another, and sometimes you can find this inside the same country. Football, universal sport, unites the countries and the cultures all over the world.
— Mr. Cattier, you have lived a long and very productive life and received worldwide recognition. You are friends with famous and prominent people. You have a wonderful family. Do you have any regrets?
— I ought not to have any regrets. Of course, sometimes you can say: “this thing I should have done in a different way” or “if I knew, I would not have done this or that” or whatever …
Everybody can always say that. Everybody will make errors or mistakes in their life and in their career, but also have beautiful success and build great things. “But in any circumstance, stay positive”.
— What sort of Armand de Brignac Champagne would you offer to newly-weds?
— I would offer the “Trilogie”. The Armand de Brignac Blanc de Blancs for the evening, the Armand de Brignac Gold for the night, and the Armand de Brignac Rose in the morning for breakfast.

“Evantra V8 was not born to please everyone, instead to be herself and to generate emotions with her character and exclusivity”.
Evantra V8 is the exclusive “tailor-made” supercar of Mazzanti automobili produced only in limited series of 5 examples per year, each of them individually personalized. As the brand tradition, its name comes from the ancient etruscan language and represents an object unique, eternal and exclusive, infact Evantra was also the name of the Godess of immortality for the etruscan people.
The design of the Evantra was created side-by-side by Luca Mazzanti and Zsolt Tarnok (Mazzanti automobili chief designer), with the concept of perfect equilibrium of classical and modern. The object was to conciliate elements difficult to harmonize to each other: a personal concept that is absolutely out of todays market trends, a really precise and tipically italian stylistical identity and a powertrain with “absolute” performance are perfectly united in forms and function. The smooth surfaces, the classicaly shaped fenderlines come from the traditional classic cars which influenced most the past creations. For the styling of the Evantra a modern and a bit more aggressive appearance was desired, so in the details more modern solutions were used. Such parts are the shape of the lights with the modern LED lights, and the precise and neat outlines and connections of the air inlets and outlets around the car. These virtually different concepts have been merged together in harmony to create this unique supercar, Evantra.
The tailor-made interior of the client is covered with all-natural leather prepared with special aniline leather treatment. The incredible soft touch of the leather is achieved thanks to a collaboration with FB1913, a leader of the fashion/luxury sector. Every aspect of personalization is possible with the infinite options of special material, including exotic leather and precious materials. The center console is equipped with a dash and data acquisition system from AIM and a Headunit (NAVI/CD/MP3) from BOSCH as first equipment. The engine starter button is placed onto the roof panel in “Mazzanti” style as in the “sister car” ANTAS. On the lower part of the console the modality selector is placed with different maps for the engine/gearbox, “Strada — Street” and “Corsa — Race”. On the Nardi steering wheel a small display shows the actual gear, while behind the paddles are placed.
